Le Mans Race Report
April 2004

ENDURANCE - State of enduring or bearing, continuance, suffering patiently without sinking

GREEN, SCREAMING AND MEAN - JOIN THE GREEN PARTY
Once again we find ourselves far from home on foreign soil in readiness for the assault on the first round of the 27th ‘Masters of Endurance’ 24hr championship - The 24 Heures Du Mans!!!

The hurdy-gurdy of the Endurance party has blown into town and the circus is in full swing within the confines of the Circuit De Bugatti and the wider environs of the town of Le Mans, streaming with bikes on all sides some popping wheelies, some just cruising.

The circuit is a big top with no top, twisting sinuously around the centre the black ribbon where leathern heroes would be pushing their bikes and selves ever onward through the following night to enter Sunday full of hope. Spirit measured with fatigue, but determined. Drained by their exertions, driving forward to three o clock and the chequered flag.

Canvas citadels ring the perimeter of the track wreathed in smoke and oddly hued vapours, booming with the nightmarish cry of tortured motors, forced to battle continuously by the murderous whirr bangers, bouncing barrages of oil burning sound on their cousins and rivals in the next mega city of canvas, campfires and burning oil.

Hordes of low men slink and saunter, clink and clatter through shadows, semi unlit places. Splitting the night with the roar of their jokes amongst vast ale imbibery. Rows of stalls dully reflecting their wares of leather apparel emboldened and emblazoned with sigils and motifs.

Black detritus and discarded Styrofoam crunch underfoot. Through the smoke and noise the colour can be perceived spiking out. Enticing you to part with strange dull coinage and grubby unfamiliar notes to scale the heights of neon struttage and bungee stardom, music blares, colours collide and clash. Happy punters shriek and drink and laugh. Nearby the rock band is cycling up for some heavy sound.

The next day will bring expectations and heavy heads for some, Three O clock Sunday the fourth of April 2004 will beckon, time will fly, preparations will continue to the last minute. Best leave the 24 hour party people to their pursuits and pleasures. Tomorrow we have to burn some gasoline.
